Sarah Chen had worked at Meridian Corp for fifteen years, rising from entry-level analyst to Senior Vice President of Operations. Her personnel file contained nothing but glowing reviews, including three "Employee of the Year" awards. On March 15, 2024, just three weeks after she filed an internal complaint about gender-based pay disparities in the executive team, Meridian terminated her employment, citing "corporate restructuring." No other executives were terminated in this restructuring. Chen, a single mother of two young children, was escorted from the building by security without being allowed to gather her personal belongings. The termination occurred on the same day Chen was scheduled to present her findings about pay inequity to the Board of Directors. Meridian's CEO, James Morrison, had previously made comments in management meetings about "not needing troublemakers" and preferring employees who were "team players." Chen had documented these comments in contemporaneous emails to her personal account. Morrison also forwarded an internal memo to HR the day after Chen's complaint, asking them to "review Chen's position for redundancy."
